Historic St. John?s Cathedral ransacked
Sometime between seven Friday night and midday Saturday there was a break-in at one of Belize City’s most treasured landmarks. And while nothing appears to have been stolen, the intrusion into historic St. John’s Cathedral has not been well received.
Fr. Lloyd Neal, Dean of St. John?s Anglican Cathedral
?Just after one o?clock on Saturday, two of my parishioners came to my home telling me that there is a supposed burglary. We then proceeded to come to the Church. When we came it was then that we found the North window towards A.C.C. open, so we could only suspect that the burglar had gotten through that window. We proceeded to look around to see what possibly they had taken, but we noticed that it was just that the place was ransacked. The different cupboards turned upside down. Nothing like vessels were missing as far as we can ascertain at this point. Unfortunately, the church that used to be so safe, we used to like to say ?safe as church?, and even the church now is being ransacked at times and this is awful, really awful.?
Back in 2002, the Cathedral also suffered a break-in and an arson attempt which almost cost parishioners their church. No arrests have been made in connection with Saturday’s break-in and police continue their investigation.
