Weekend Sporting Highlights with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

The persistent downpour across the nation over the weekend forced a cancellation of most of the scheduled sporting events. The three Belikin Cup matches advertised for Sunday, twenty-seventh October were among the victims and will be stages Wednesday at 7:30 P.M. Paradise Freedom fighters will host Police United at the Toledo Union. San Ignacio United gets a visit from the BDF while F.C. Belize will be at the M.C.C. to face Verdes F.C. weather permitting of course. Looking to week six we find three matches scheduled for 7:30 P.M.   on Saturday. Police will face F.C. Belize at the Isidoro Beaton’s Stadium, Belmopan Bandits travel to the Carl Ramos Stadium for its date with the Belize Defense Force and Verdes will play host to San Ignacio United inside the Marshalleck Stadium.

In basketball news Game II of the BDBA Firms 2013 finals scheduled for Friday night at Bird’s Isle was also rained out and the Association has confirmed that this game comes up this Friday, November first. In the meantime, the junior exhibition match up between Team Truckers and SJC on Friday’s undercard was completed before the rains fell. In an exciting match that went into overtime, Truckers rolled past SJC in an 80-76 final score.  Meanwhile folks, only the CSSA Volleyball Competition completed its schedule of ballgames. On Thursday, St. Catherine smashed Wesley College 25-7, 25-14 and Belize High School beat Nazarene High 25-12, 25-15; that’s in female play. While in the male nightcap, ACC needed 3 sets to get past Wesley College: 25-13, 24-26, 15-12. On Friday, Belize High School outlasted Ladyville Technical 23-25, 25-17, 15-13, but the make matchup between SJC and Ladyville Tech was rained out. Nevertheless the playoffs begin tonight. St. Catherine’s faces Belize High School while Wesley College battles Ladyville High. Game II in the best of the best comes up on Wednesday and the champions on the weekend.

Turning to the cycling scene. Here’s a reminder of the leaders in the crystal weekend warriors 5 race series. Warren Coye of Santino’s leads the A class with 126 points, Beat Brunchwelier of Cayo Rentals is next with 113 and Mark Gentle has 79. Mark Reid of Zitro tops class B with 136 points while teammates Clinton Abraham and Edwardo Villanueva show 120 and 199 points respectively. And in Class C Zitro’s Salvador Alvarado leads with 125 points, teammate Louis Usher is next with 113 points while Steve Guild of Truckers Posse is at 3rd place with 112 points. Staying with the cycling scene, this morning we caught up with Misses Jane Bennett Head of the University of the West Indies Open Campus here in Belize as she prepares to present the 4th annual UWI Day of Races this Sunday, November 3rd on Marine Parade.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
