Bodybuilding and much more on Weekend Sports
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
Week six of the PLB’s Belikin Cup found a struggle with Police United needing a win against FC Belize at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium Saturday to escape from the cellar of the football league. Therefore it was no surprise that the Police came out roaring as in the 3rd minute of play Trevor Lennon sets table perfectly for Harisson Roches who is thwarted by a good defensive play from right back Shannon Flowers. However, it’s the visitor FC Belize who opens the scoreboard at the 15th minute when Jarret Davis touch down this pass to beat Jamie Brooks with the left foot for the 1 – zip lead. The police look to rely off this set kick triggered by Amin August, Jr. and Kafu Roches is not too far off with this full volley. We’re in 2nd half action when Kafu Roaches beats Steven Baizar to this long pass to touch the ball into the net to tie the ballgame at 1 apiece at the 58th minute. Devon Makin then tries to give Police the lead with this left foot launch that inch outside the far upright. Bernard Linares gets his turn to make it a 2 – 1 Police lead off this corner kick but the header misses the target. So the Police bring Lennox Castillo and Evan Mariano off the bench in search of the W and then almost get the victory when Castillo deals to Mariano who is foiled by necessary touch from goalkeeper Glenford Chimilio. Both teams share the points as the long whistle blew to the 1 – 1 toe. In other action around the league Belmopan Bandits handed the BDF its first loss in a 2 – 1 finish and Verdes blanked San Ignacio 2 – zip. Week 7 hits off on Saturday the 9th with the Bandits hosting Verdes, San Ignacio now in the cellar with host Police United and the BDF hits the road to face Paradise Freedom Fighter inside the Toledo Union Field.
Turning to the cycling scene we must give kudos to the UWI Open Campus in Belize for displaying what the embrace between Education and Sports should look with the presentation of the 4th annual UWI Day of Focus. Dyanni Cleland won the 8-10 years female category edging out Ashanti Mayen. In the male side Derrick Chavarria prevails with Henry Li and Jaylen Blades 3rd. Jasmine Muschamp took the 11 – 13 years class unchallenged while Paulita Chavarria rode in 2nd and Abigail Castellanos 3rd. Patrick Williams won the male edition holding off Tyler Terry. While Evander McCulloch held on for 3rd place. Derrick Chavarria easily won the Open Primary School race. Henri Li again takes 2nd and Arian Lovell pulls up 3rd. Delawn Abraham takes the Junior category in a hotly contested race forcing Delon Gentle into 2nd and Jasslyn Chavarria Jr., 3rd. In the meantime, Kerah Eiley edges out Patricia Chavarria for the female category and Paulita Chavarria has to settle for 3rd. Now here are the elite in a medium dash to the finish line and Erwin Middleton prevails over Joel Borland and Phillip Leslie pulls up 3rd. Folks at the High School level, Darrien Anderson took top honors with Leighton Lord second and Andrew Green 3rd.
In boxing news, 2 boxers from the Leopold Smart Boxing Gym represented Belize at the Central American Amateur Boxing Tournament at Managua, Nicaragua which concluded yesterday. And both returned with bronze medals from a competition that featured all 7 Central American countries. We take this opportunity to congratulate Max Williams and Sherman Galvez. Folks you’ll get to see these guys perform against a team from Cancun, Mexico under the Belikin tent in the Hour Bar Compound on November 15th. So stay tuned.
Now to the bodybuilding scene. Rigo Vellows took the light heavy weight class at Saturday’s Bodybuilding contest as Ernest Broaster finished 2nd and Deon Banner 3rd. Roger Edgar prevailed in the Welterweight category as Deon Ortiz took the runner up spot and Deon Danderson settled for 3rd. The middleweight title went to Christopher Carter with Clayton Greenidge 2nd and Delvan Palacio 3rd. however, Clayton Greenidge took the Master’s Class forcing Deon Danderson into 2nd and Guy Neal finished 3rd. Folks give it up for Clinton Tucker who emerged as top man in the Men’s Physique category with Keion Griffith 2nd and David Requeña 3rd. in Bikini Fitness, Annlyn Apolonio stood out to take top honors and Christina Requeña pulled up 2nd with Charlyn Flowers 3rd.
Meanwhile folks, Cricel Castillo is a monster in the Body Figure Contest and handily took the 2013 title despite a challenge from Gina Lovell who had to settle for 2nd and Josephine Gault finished 3rd. Kaya Cattouse won the Women’s Bodybuilding category.
Finally folks, the Port/Airport Authority failed to close out the championship series against Customs in Game II on the 3 game series Friday night at Bird’s isle. Earl Johnson was the only Port of Belize player with double digit stats after striking for a mere 10 points. On the Customs press, Winston Pratt deals to Marvin Skeen who sinks the bucket and would finish with 10 points. Of course the big man for Customs is Winston Pratt who hit the game high 11 points, pulled the game high 8 boards and had 5 assists which is another game high for the triple. He also scored 7 of 10 free throws. Elsworth Felix was the only other player in double figures with 11 points. Game III is now set for Friday night. 2 men enter; one leaves with the BDBA Title.
Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
