Belizean ballers face El Salvador on Sat. night
To put it mildly, the Belize National team has had a tough time in international play but the players and coaches are going down kicking and screaming. This weekend our boys will play El Salvador at home in an eleventh hour bid for bronze and a spot in Centro Basket. According to Harold Zuniga, general secretary of the Belize Basketball Federation, team Belize is in desperate need of fans’ support.

?This is wishful thinking. We can beat El Salvador. I?m hoping beyond hope that we get financial support that we need so that nobody is complaining about, ?we no get no allowance, we no get this, get no get that.? And we are hoping we can do it starting this weekend. So we?d play one game here in Belize, one night only, on Saturday. We travel to El Salvador to play on Wednesday, so we?d leave here on Tuesday to play Wednesday and come back to Belize on Thursday. The thing about the two games, is that we either win the two games or score extremely high in one game and lose the next game, and we automatically qualify. This is the Central American region. This is COCABA championship so we have to at least get third place in COCABA championship and then start dreaming big dreams.?
Centre court action is expected to start at eight on Saturday night. In related news, following serious injury during Belize’s game against Costa Rica, tonight we understand that Kenton Paulino is recovering from two fractured bones in his neck. Paulino has returned to his home in the United States but we are told that the injury is not expected to hurt his chances of a future career in basketball.
