Open Your Eyes live from Cancun, Mexico

Story PictureBelize’s national basketball team is heading to the regional qualifying games for the Olympics in 2012 and that journey starts in Cancun. And what better place to enjoy the games… Channel Five will be bringing you live broadcast of the games and extended coverage on Open Your Eyes. And what happens in Cancun will not stay in Cancun as we broadcast the Central American Basketball Championships live and provide commentary on the progress of the Belize National Team. William Neal told News Five about all that can be expected from OYE’s visit to Cancun including interviews with Quintano Roo’s Secretary of Tourism.

William Neal, Host of Open Your Eyes, Live from Cancun
“The OYE team—Open Your Eyes—hopes to go to Cancun and bring a comprehensive coverage of the COCABA games just to get Belizeans more involved and see that basketball is something that we’re very passionate about and that we should definitely rally behind the national team. We also plan to bring a little bit of what’s happening in Cancun itself. We’ll talk a little bit with their head of tourism bureau. We’ll also get an interview with a businessman so we understand the situation there. We have a lot of talk right now about economic downturns and stuff but still just to get an idea of how Cancun is faring in hard times. But the main emphasis will be on basketball and the national team.”

Jose Sanchez
“If the national team does not fare off so well, are you still going to broadcast all the games?”

William Neal
“Well, we have a game plan of our own and that game plan is there are three games that they must play. And we will follow those games very closely and you know have a discussion about the strategies that they employed; what worked, what didn’t work. I think we have to look at it as just a chance to really examine ourselves as a basketball team, a national team, and to lend support to them as well to let them know that you’re not out there in isolation playing. Long gone are the days when a team goes away and come back not even with a picture or so. I think people want to get involved, want to stay engaged and that’s what Open Your Eyes is hoping to do.”

Jose Sanchez
“And this will be a live broadcast?”

William Neal
“Well, we’re going to have two live editions of Open Your Eyes from Cancun; Monday and Tuesday’s shows will be live from there. Then we will also have on Channel Five at different times because based on what the schedule mandates.”

The top three basketball teams qualify for participation in the Centro-Basketball Competition.
