St. Johns Vianney students scared of being shot in class

Story PictureBut while some students can concentrate on getting good grades, others must deal with the constant sound and fear of gunshots at school. According to Vice Principal of St. John Vianney, Rosamond Perez, exposure to gun violence has become a frighteningly regular occurrence for students at the Faber’s Road campus. This afternoon, Perez maintains that something needs to be done before one of her students becomes a victim.

Rosamond Perez, Vice Principal, St. John Vianney
?This morning we had more shooting just after eight-thirty this morning and parents were calling the office, inquiring about the students, wondering how they were coping in school because apparently some of the children caught in that cross-fire there again in our school and just around nine-thirty to ten-thirty this morning, the man that got killed at Cumberbatch Field had just passed and hail our school warden. He just say, hi, to miss Bailey and Miss Joan and not even a minute and he was shot and here again the children they heard, they know he?s a relative of them, and it?s our concern, this needs to stop.?

?Our students, most of them, or I would say all of them are from this neighbourhood and they walk, three-quarters of them walk and that?s our concern because if it doesn?t stop, one of them will get hurt.?

Aaliyah, Student, St. John Vianney
?There was about four or five gunshots. I was in my class doing maths and then we saw a little but of blood when we were coming back this afternoon.?

Alyssa Noble, Reporting
?Can you tell me what and how you felt when you heard the shots being fired??

Bianca, Student, St. John Vianney
?I felt shocked. I went on the ground because I thought it was very close to the class I was in.?

Alyssa Noble
?What were you doing at that time??

Bianca
?I was doing a mock BIJAT.?

Alyssa Noble
?Is this the first time you?ve heard anything like this at your school??

Bianca
?No.?

Alyssa Noble
?You?ve heard shots being fired already??

Bianca
?Shakes head, yes.?

Alyssa Noble
?How does it make you feel when you have to come to a school where you heard shots?

Bianca
?Well very afraid because our family has to walk.?

Aaliyah
?It makes me feel very sorry to walk from home to school because I always dream that one of these days I will get shot.?
