New Site Erei heads for R.F.G. Cup finals
Good evening. I?m James Adderley and thanks for boarding this latest flight of Sports Monday. Week five of the R.F.G. Trophy Tournament play-offs brought New Site Erei of Dangriga to the M.C.C. Grounds for the rematch with F.C. Belize looking to avenge last weeks 2-1 defeat.
Some four minutes in Elroy Kuylen is forced to the ground by Shannon Flowers right on top the eighteen as the referee blows fowl.
When play resumes Norman ?Tilliman? Nunez deals to Elroy Smith and New Site Erie takes the early 1-zip lead.
At the other end, Jeromy Jones tries to link up with Rudolph Flowers but the New Site defence hangs pretty tough.
Folks we?re thirty-four minutes into the ballgame, when Darwin Castillo mounts this individual effort from half field to fire this long distance low cruise bomb that gives Dangriga a 2-zip lead.
Off this corner kick, Clifford Usher gets off a left foot for F.C. Belize but Woodrow West handles the situation and at intermission we have a 2-nil ballgame.
Moments into second half, Harrison Kafu Roaches gets this one on one chance at goalkeeper Rawley but the result is certainly disappointing.
For sure people, Rudolph Flowers will want this one back as he squanders a truly golden opportunity for F.C. Belize.
On this press Lennox Castillo does everything right, except get the ball pass goalkeeper Rawley so the scoreboard remains 2-nil.
On the very next New Site push forward, Lennox Castillo beats his man, gets pass the keeper and finds Harrison Kafu Roaches who scores into an empty goal for the 3-zip, New Site lead.
F.C. Belize tries to get back into this ballgame on this push, but Thedran Reid does not put enough on the bola to make it count.
Folks we?re in the final minute of regulation, when the substitute keeper for New Site Erei fails to hold down the ball. Jeromy Jones stays with the play to get F.C. Belize its consolation goal in the 3-1 final score.
In the other play-off match-up on Sunday, Hankook Verdes hurt the Placencia Pirates in a 2-1 score. Just after five weeks of the R.F.G. Trophy play-offs, New Site shows 13 points and is heading to the finals. Hankook Verdes shows 7 points, F.C. Belize 4 and the Placencia Pirates 4.
This round of the play-offs concludes Wednesday night, seven thirty, when Placencia forces F.C. Belize at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium; while Hankook Verdes will be at home against New Site Erei of Dangriga.
Turning to the Lion Man scene people, yesterday?s presentation of the first Corporate Triathlon by the Belize Triathlon Association was scrapped so we caught up with David Gomez, who is a member of the Association.

?What happened was that earlier in the week we had a lot of rain and the weather bureau had called for even more rain over the weekend. So the committee took a decision to postpone the race in view of that weather announcement. However, it worked out that after we made the announcement to postpone the race, Sunday turned out quite nice. We will go ahead with the race for June fourth, which is this coming Sunday, at the same location. It is the same race; the first Corporate Triathlon.?
In cricket news, it was certainly a nail biter the entire way at Lord?s Bank on Saturday, as the home team Sunrise edged Summer Fever of Bermudian Landing in a 206-205 final score. Michael Soberanis led the way with eighty-six runs, while Clerance Anthony contributed forty-six runs and he also took five wickets. For Summer Fever Jerome Wade total forty-one and Predep Perera thirty-nine.
In the meantime Folks, the Special Olympics was staged at the Marion Jones sporting complex on Saturday and here the torch flies high in the hands of Marlon Rodriguez, who has become a role model in the Special Olympics community.
In hand to lead the event with the oath of the athletes is none other than Governor General Sir Colville Young. And then it?s the parade of athletes complete with the marching band and we must applaud this effort.

?While we were about starting the preparations for this programme, we of course had in mind that it would not be an easy task and that was what actually happened. On the day of the event, we can say that we were satisfied with the results we have so far. It was the largest one concerning any track and field in Belize because we have over one hundred athletes from all the regions of Belize. And of course, we have over sixty volunteers present at that day and other spectators. So it was a very huge success for the organisation.?
So let?s take you inside the female fifty metres. It?s Doris Balthezar on the outside, Yesenia Gongora pulls up to challenge, but Balthezar prevails for the big w while Kelsey Balan settles for third.

?I had coaches working along with me, very closely in preparing those athletes. It was a very hard task, because sometimes it?s very hard getting them to the Marion Jones Stadium so that they can practise those events, but it paid off in the end. We had more than half of them turning out on that day. It?s really a tough job, practising and getting them ready for the event, but the coaches worked very closely with me and we got them on the way.?
In the meantime, Doris Belthazar receives her gold medal from basketballer Darwin Carter of the Belize national Team. As Yesenia Gongora gets silver and yes, Kelsey Balan takes home bronze and to all three we give our heart felt congratulations. We must allow applaud the efforts of all concerned in making the Special Olympics in 2006, more meaningful to both the community and the participating athletes.
Finally folks here?s the finish of the fifty-five mile Santino Bike Club race as it finished at Orange Walk yesterday. Adrian Faux pulls the trigger and prevails to take big w. He clocked at 2 hours, 24 minutes and 38 seconds. Living legend, Charlie Lewis takes second place in this event, Gregory Lovell Dr. third, Kenneth Butler pulls up fourth, Butty your big, while John Burns rounds out the top fifth.
