Fonseca says G.O.B. should inquire on eavesdropping

Francis Fonseca

As to the alleged involvement of the US Government in eavesdropping, Fonseca says that the Government of Belize should want to gather information on what is happening.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“I think it is a very serious matter. I like many other Belizeans watched the interview by Misses Burges on Channel Five, the Dickie Bradley Show. I found her to be very credible; I found her to be sincere…just as an observer. And what she revealed was very startling. It’s very important that we take this matter seriously. It is very important for the government to take this matter seriously; the minister of immigration, the prime minister have to respond to these allegations. They can’t only be talking about suing channel five and suing the lady. They have to respond to these allegations. It is clear now as you pointed out that the U.S. embassy appears to be involved in this matter. According to the whistleblower, she carried out extensive interview process with them for many hours and signed affidavits. It is in our interest to find out as a country and as a people what took place there. So we should know what is happening. It is a very serious matter, the prime minister has admitted that there is an ongoing visa hustle, if you like, taking place that allegedly involves cabinet minister. The Belizean people deserve to know who are these ministers, what exactly is this visa hustle, what does it involve, what is being done to put an end to it. So these are all very important questions that have to be answered.  I think any responsible government would try to get all the available information including the information that this lady has provided to the U.S. Embassy. I am sure that given what I have heard her say; that she would be prepared to provide that information to the government as well. She has done so to the U.S. Embassy so I am sure she will be prepared to provide it to the government so that they have a responsibility as I said to gather all the information and disclose that information to the Belizean people.”
