Baby Jaguars take on Central American powerhouse, the Honduran U-sixteen team

The Baby Jaguars are tonight facing Central American powerhouse Honduras after falling to Guatemala in a devastating three-one loss on Wednesday.  As the UNCAF Under-sixteen Tournament enters its tenth match, Belize is holding on by a thin thread if it intends to clinch third place in the regional competition.  After all it would have to earn a total of six points by defeating Honduras in the final match of the evening in order to maintain its standing.  News Five spoke with Luis Pena by phone at the end of the Guatemala/Nicaragua match to find out what the Jaguars’ prospects are.

“The UNCAF Tournament is in match ten today with the first game being El Salvador versus Costa Rica and in that game we had El Salvador beating Costa Rica one to nothing and the second match of the evening we had Guatemala beating Nicaragua two to one.  So the race is tied right now for a point which means that Costa Rica stayed at number seven.  Guatemala made nine points tonight and Honduras tonight can make seven points if they beat Belize.  But with Belize now, playing Honduras tonight Belize can make six which can definitely keep us in standing until tomorrow.  Tomorrow we would have to beat Costa Rica at nil and hope that Honduras beats Costa Rica tomorrow and El Salvador loses to Nicaragua.  So the race is very tight right but we are hoping that our boys can stand up to the test and prevail tonight and tomorrow.”

Luis Pena

“Well there is a high probability that Belize can beat Honduras tonight because our boys are ready and after the first three games I believe they are more than ready for tonight.”

“And as you mentioned they would have to have an overall total of six points in order to advance.”

“Well the points are what gives us the standings so beating Honduras that would definitely keep us in contention to at least make it to third place if we beat Costa Rica tomorrow then we can make nine points.  But we, like I mentioned before, we’d have to hope that Honduras beats Costa Rica and also El Salvador loses to Nicaragua.”

The Belize/Honduras match will air immediately following this newscast.
