Readycall workers vote to unionise

Employees of Ready Call Centre in Belize City are tonight celebrating, having scored a victory in their battle for union representation. According to a Press Office release, on Wednesday the Ministry of Labour conducted a poll at the site. When the results were tallied it was revealed that eighty-one point six percent of the employees who voted did so in favour of unionisation, while eighteen point four were against. In light of that popular consensus, the Belize Communication Workers Union has been appointed to bargain on behalf of the employees. Ever since Ready Call opened its doors in June of 2005, the business has been plagued with adverse publicity over allegations by employees of sexual harassment, inadequate breaks, unpaid wages, and more recently dismissal of workers as a means of union busting. For its part, Ready Call management has staunchly denied the accusations, claiming that workers were fired due to poor performance.
