Mother says more could have been done to save toddler

Story PictureAnna Guy said before doctors transferred the baby to Belize City, they made a superficial slit on his throat, but not on the trachea to create airspace. She added that in all the confusion, there was a lot that could have been done in order to save their baby’s life.

Anna Guy, Mother of Deceased
“The Western Regional Hospital didn’t inform me about an air ambulance, they didn’t analyze the situation and say this is not one that we can handle, you might want to fly out your child quickly. I didn’t even know there was an air ambulance.”

Marion Ali
“You weren’t adequately informed?”

Anna Guy
“I wasn’t advised at all , at all. I had to be asking the doctor please, where can I got to get help. Do you have the instruments, please. I was desperate, begging for help. After talking to many other doctors, they told me that the slit should have been the initial treatment given in order to restore his airway.”

Marion Ali
“You spoke with other doctors who said this?”

Anna Guy
“Yes.”

Marion Ali
“So that should have been the first thing that they should have done.”

Anna Guy
“Yes, that should have been—I was told that what the child needed was standard medical procedure that was not given. The initial treatment of getting air into my child’s body back, in getting oxygen, was not taken. There was like a one hour delay.”

Anna said when they reached Belize Health Care Partners doctors managed to restore the toddler’s heartbeat. Little Jaydan was however, rendered brain dead and was kept on life support for six more days. He was buried on July twenty eighth. She has since written to the Ministry of Health requesting an investigation, which Director of Health Service, Dr. Michael Pitts told us is already underway.
