Belize National Boxing Selection games being held this Sunday
Amateur boxers from across the country will be competing this weekend for a chance at making the Belize National Boxing Selection. Pugilists from various gyms, including the Lion’s Den One and Two, as well as the Leopold Smart Boxing Gym will converge at the Bird’s Isle on Saturday where they will participate in a daylong series of events organized by the Belize Boxing Federation. According to President Moses Sulph, the competition is seeking to identify the best boxers in the country to compete in upcoming international events in 2014.
Moses Sulph, President, Belize Boxing Federation
“The Belize Boxing Federation presents Road to Glory, National Team Selection Tournament, which will be held at the Bird’s Isle this Sunday at one-thirty p.m. General admission is five dollars, kids two dollars. A reservation is fifteen dollars. We are asking the general public to come out and support because this is the first stage of picking the national team to represent the country in four international games coming up out of the country next year: the youth championship, the youth Olympics, the commonwealth games, the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Iber-Women Championship which will be held next year. So we are selecting a team through the elimination process of boxers proving themselves in their weight-class. So we are asking the Belizean public to come out and support. Boxing can create a potentially positive avenue for youths financially in the country, but we need the support because these events do cost and the Boxing Federation, like all federations in the country almost, has no finance. So we are trying to see how we can give our Belizean youths an opportunity and one of the ways is selecting a national team.”

“Is this opportunity or event open to other gyms across the city or across the country by extension?”
Moses Sulph

And as stipulated by our international affiliation to Iber, we are the national federation for this country hence all boxing clubs that are registered with us. If you are not registered with the Belize Boxing Federation, you cannot take part.”
