…And spreads Xmas cheer and awards to the community

Today was a day for spreading Christmas cheer and for saying thanks, and Precinct two on Mahogany Street is no slouch when it comes to showing appreciation. That precinct, led by veteran Police Officer Brent Hamilton has been credited for a decrease in crime in the area, and significant success at community outreach. And for that, the precinct today said thanks to all those in the community and outside who have helped them in any way. It was a long list, but Hamilton told News Five today that more are always welcome.

“It’s just an appreciation, of giving back something to the business people and committee members who have supported me during the court of the whole year. They have continuously, from since January, given their time, their help or their money so that the Mahogany Youth Cadet Corp could have achieved a lot of stuff in the sense of when time to do a little trip or having a little get-together or whatever it might be, they are the people that come to help us.”

“Today’s event, it also commemorates with what our policing strategy is: working with the community. We police by consent and we police with the community. But by working with the cadets today is basically what sergeant Hamilton’s efforts is showing today, that the youths are being targeted because they are the future of our society. So the event is to recognize these youths who have been consistent, persistent in whatever areas and try to mold them to become the better citizens that we wish to see in our society.”

“One of the good things that I like about it is that when they help, they don’t only help the kids, but they help the parents of this community. When we find out what is happening with these kids, we can also address it at different level also. And those are one of the key reasons why crime is down because we are not only fixing one problem. We are also helping the mothers, the single mothers, the single fathers to help them find a better solution and way in life.”

Precinct Two also operates a very successful cadet program with one hundred and fifty members at last count. Hamilton says if you’re feeling generous and want to get involved in a good thing, you can always find him on the job Mahogany Street.
