SATIM to file injunction against oil exploration

Following a public meeting in Punta Gorda on Tuesday night, today community leaders and managers of the protected areas of southern Belize have announced their intention to have “an injunction filed immediately to stop any further petroleum exploration activities in the Sarstoon Temash National Park”. According to a joint press release, representatives of conservation groups and community leaders have unanimously agreed that “the lack of due process and disregard for existing signed agreements and international treaty obligations under which the oil company has been granted concession is of extreme concern”. Word out of Belmopan tonight is that officials from the Ministries of Natural Resources and the Environment as well as the department of Geology will continue with its plans to meet with concerned citizens about seismic testing in the Sarstoon Temash National Park.
