Hit and run driver turns himself in
A hit and run driver has been arrested in connection with a fatal traffic accident on the Southern Highway. According to police, around six on Thursday morning they were called to a spot between miles five and six where they saw a badly damaged bicycle and the body of a man lying on the right hand side of the highway. Subsequent investigations identified the deceased as fifty year old Marroquin Cruz, a farmer from Mayflower village. But within hours, the driver of the vehicle that knocked down Cruz handed himself into police. Twenty-four year old Henry Ortiz of Dangriga told cops that he hit the cyclist because he was blinded by the headlights of another vehicle. Ortiz has since been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, failure to stop and render aid, and failure to report an accident.
