15 year old murdered in Benque; jealous boyfriend charged

Uncontrolled jealousy also seems to be the likely motive for a murder that occurred late Sunday night in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

Benque Viejo police say twenty-two year old Israel Geovanni Contreras is the man who killed fifteen year old Anna Aldana. The young girl?s body was found behind this abandoned school building situated just across from where she lived with relatives.

?It?s a minor we are talking about and until when we have people running around and killing these minors for that matter, that in itself is disturbing. It shows that our young children are not safe on the streets even in a quiet place such as Benque.?

Investigations reveal that Aldana, who is from Guatemala, came to Belize just a little over a year ago and soon become involved with Contreras. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Alvan Gentle, Contreras was recently charged with carnal knowledge for engaging in sex with the young girl. Sources close to the case say Contreras has since confessed to the murder saying he killed the girl because she was fooling around on him. A.S.P. Gentle would not comment on the motive.

This evening representatives from the Guatemalan consulate visited the victim’s home to speak with relatives. It is expected that Aldana’s body will be returned to her family across the border. Contreras has been charged with murder and remanded to Hattieville Prison.
