Career Day at SJC
Students looking for their dream jobs or for career options had the opportunity today to interact with a number of organizations. Over at the Saint John’s Gym, a number of organizations were available to interest students in different areas of work and study. Duane Moody dropped by for the event.

Career Day…For the students of St. John’s College, it’s the first of a kind event that was held at the institution. Today, second and fourth form students, who are in the process of determining the field of study they will pursue at the secondary and tertiary level, respectively, were provided with a show and tell from several organizations, entrepreneurs and other professionals.

“We developed it based on four modules. We want them to understand what is work, what it entails for you to get a job, what is the professional, how can you from a small and a crazy idea develop into a creative industry and also from a crazy idea, how you can develop an empire.”
The Student Council President helped to organize the event which he says is a great opportunity that offers options.

“In reality it is a very crucial moment in all our lives. Being a fourth former, I’m sixteen, after this, my life will start…beginning my tertiary level education and it is good to have an idea or perspective as to what is out there cause a lot of people think about the typical job of being a doctor, a lawyer, being a police officer. But what I really like about this career day is that it gives you the perspective beyond the stereotypical jobs that they have. They have N.G.O.s like OCEANA, PACT, EMTs from BERT so it gives you a wide variety of different options that you have after high school.”
For some students, however, they are still undecided with what area of study they will take on.

“All of these stalls out here can probably persuade you to pick a different subject. For example, if you had wanted to take business, you may see one of these stalls and it may encourage you to take three science or another science just because how interesting they all appear.”

“Well actually no, but to other people I can see this being very beneficial to him.”

“What’s your plan? Do you want to go business or science?”

Christopher Majares
Christopher Majares, 4th Form Student, St. John’s College
“It has opened my area of thinking so that I can see and experience more things in today’s; society and what Belize needs for us to develop more as a country and how I can attack these needs and further my education so that I can further develop the country as a whole.”
For Majares, the career day has furthermore convinced him to become a marine biologist. Duane Moody for News Five.
