Police corporal killed in road accident

Story PictureA traffic accident in the Corozal district has left a police officer dead. Reports are that around nine thirty on Wednesday night, Corporal Raul Magana and his family were heading to their home in San Joaquin Village when their car became involved in a three car pileup. Officers say when they arrived at the scene, located between miles eighthy-two and eighty-three on the Northern Highway, they found two small cars extensively damaged and a pickup truck with a dent to its left side. Magana, suffering from severe head and body injuries had to be cut free from his Mitsubishi Mirage and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Corozal hospital. His wife, Marleni, broke both her legs while daughter Seleni and cousin Myra Pena were both rendered unconscious by the impact. They have since been transferred to the K.H.M.H. for additional treatment. Of the other passengers in the vehicle, Julian Magana sustained a head injury, while cousins Elena and Christian Pena are being treated for a broken hip and swollen leg respectively. The driver of the other vehicle, a Geo Metro, was Enrique Montejo. He was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head and foot. The driver and passengers of the pickup walked away unhurt. Up to news time tonight investigators were still trying to determine the exact cause of the accident, although initial reports say Montejo, travelling in the opposite direction of Magana, collided with the policeman’s fully loaded vehicle.
