Arsenal of assault weapons found on Deer Caye
It’s been a playground of sports fishermen looking for action on the flats, but tonight it’s clear that Deer Caye, west of San Pedro Town, has also been used as a hideout for some serious criminals. Over the weekend a joint operation between the Belize Defence Force and Belize National Coast Guard unearthed on the island a cache of high powered assault rifles. The total haul came to thirty-four guns which, from the police photograph, appears to be heavy on automatic and semi-automatics ranging from M16’s to AK47’s, and SKS’s. According to police, no one was found on the island at the time of the discovery and there have been no arrests. Deer Caye, lying in the lagoon behind Ambergis Caye, is not far from the Mexican border. The area is said to be frequented by drug runners transporting large quantities of cocaine from Colombia through Belize and Mexico to the United States of America.
