Patrick Bevans arraigned for attempted theft

A Belize City man, who claims he was badly beaten by the police and B.D.F. after he was accused of trying to steal a rifle assigned to a B.D.F. officer in January of this year, was before the court this afternoon to answer to a charge of attempted theft.  He is twenty-two year old Patrick Bevans, a resident of a Curl Thompson Street address.  Bevans was released from the K.H.M.H. on Tuesday and taken to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today where he appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith.  He was arraigned for attempted theft and pleaded not guilty.  Bevans could barely walk and when asked what happened to him, he said he was beaten by the police and B.D.F.  According to his attorney, Simeon Sampson, Bevans is suffering from fractures on both feet and is on medication. He obtained bail and was ordered to surrender his passport and not to go near the B.D.F. compound but to remain at his mother’s house on Curl Thompson Street.
