Officer injured in border weed bust
The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into a shooting incident that took place at the Benque Viejo border on Thursday night. According to the authorities, around eight that night they were on mobile patrol along the banks of the Mopan River when they saw a man with a backpack walking in the bush. They detained the man and upon searching the bag, found one thousand grams of suspected weed. But before they could slap on the handcuffs, the suspect made a dash for freedom. The officers gave chase but when he caught him, the accused picked up a rock and hit one of the cops in the face. Another officer tried to help, but another struggle ensued. Reports are the man tried to grab the officer’s firearm and during the scuffle, the gun went off, injuring the civilian in the foot. Both injured men were transported to the San Ignacio Hospital where doctors certified the officer’s injuries as wounding. He was treated and released, but the suspect remains in stable condition under police guard pending assault and drug trafficking charges. Police have not released the names of the officers involved in the arrest.
