Butcher gets 7 years for shooting employee
A Belize City businessman has been sentenced for fatally shooting his employee. This morning Edward Reyes, convicted of manslaughter for the death of Norman “Butta” Ferguson, appeared in court for mitigation and sentencing. Ten persons gave statements on his behalf before Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh sentenced the butcher to seven years in prison.
On January twenty-second 2005, Reyes shot Ferguson to the chest during a confrontation at his store, Prime Cut Meats on Central American Boulevard. During the trial, Reyes gave an un-sworn testimony from the dock, claiming that he never meant to kill Ferguson and only fired the shot in self-defence. Reyes was defended by attorneys Ellis Arnold, Michel Chebat, and Lutchman Sooknandan.
