High powered weapons seized in city raid

This morning in a pre-dawn raid, Belize City police acting on a tip, visited a residence on George Street. A search was conducted and on the house’s rooftop authorities discovered several high powered assault weapons and a quantity of ammunition. Police say they strongly suspect the guns were recently used and are investigating to see who had their fingers on the trigger.

?They were found in an area in the George Street area. There is a particular house, but we do not think that it is wise at this point to pinpoint that evidence, because we don?t think that the persons living there were really in anyway connected to that. As you can see from the pictures, they are some very big guns. One is an Ak-47, the other is a submachine gun, and one is a Tec-9, which is also a rapid fire weapon. These are weapons that can fire several rounds per second, so they can do a lot of damage.?

?That?s anybody?s guess. You can speculate, but we believe that because of the porous nature of the border and because of the fact that many countries around us have had revolutions and wars, up to recent times, that in fact there are a surplus of these guns out there and as a result, these people have been able to get some over from across the border.?

?But certainly we believe that we?ve gotten the bigger ones off the street. We believe that they aren?t a whole lot of these guns, but it?s just a couple of guns that people have been hearing all this rapid gunfire at night and we think that these are the very guns that have been used. We do know that there are a number of illegal firearms on the street and the commissioner continues to appeal to the general public to assist us, to let us know if there?s any person or any location where these guns are at and certain the police will act.?

Viewers may recall that it was exactly one week ago also on the city?s south side the police discovered two grenades in an abandoned lot. Police would not say if all findings are related.
