Were busted Mexicans hired hitmen?
Two Mexican men were arraigned in court today, charged with attempting to kidnap and kill a resident of Orange Walk. Thirty-three year old David Rendon and twenty-seven year old Jesus Araujo were jointly charged before Magistrate Herbert Lord this afternoon with preparation for murder, conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Special prosecutor Linden Flowers asked that bail be denied as investigations continue into the case and there are concerns for the safety of the victim. Chief Magistrate Lord declared that any bail application would have to be made to the Supreme Court anyway as the charges are indictable offences. Both men were then remanded to Hattieville Prison until April eighteenth. Rendon and Araujo were arrested on March ninth after an anonymous tip led authorities to a Corozal hotel room where they found two nine millimetre handguns, one loaded with fifteen rounds of ammunition, a magazine with another fifteen rounds, and a bag containing eighteen more bullets. Initial investigations into the illegal weapons have revealed that Rendon and Araujo may be hired hitmen. Their target? Court sources indicate an Orange Walk businessman named Alvaro Zetina. As to the motive, police appear to be playing their cards close to the chest, escorting the duo under heavy security and staying tight-lipped about their evidence. Rendon and Araujo were represented in court today by Sandra Garoy of Arnold and Company.
