Man under the influence knocked down and killed
Drinking and driving is illegal because of the risks involved, but an accident near Benny’s on the Northern Highway proved that drinking and walking is just as dangerous. Sixty-two year old Roy Mencies of the Belama Phase Two area was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when he attempted to cross the road at about seven-fifteen Wednesday night. That risky move turned fatal, when he was hit by a Toyota Pickup driven by Carlomagno Romero of Belize City. Romero stopped to render assistance, but it was too late for Mencies, who was then transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital with severe head and body injuries. He was pronounced dead on arrival. Because of the damage to the vehicle, there are suspicions that Romero could have been speeding, but according information from the Police Traffic Department, their investigation has not determined that. This is the third incident of its kind in that vicinity since the beginning of the year and poor visibility in the area as well a lack of speed bumps can be attributed to that. While the police investigation continues, a Notice of Intended Prosecution has been issued to Romero.
