Coye Family Attorney gives update on challenge of unpaid taxes

Arthur Saldivar

The FIU had indicated that it would appeal the ruling of the Appellate Court. But the forty-two days in which that leave of appeal would have had to been made to the Caribbean Court of Justice has already elapsed. That aside, however, Saldivar says that his clients are still facing the challenge of the unpaid taxes by income tax.

Arthur Saldivar, Attorney for Coye Family

“The income tax department has been informed that…well there was no assessment; that what they were seeking to do was arbitrary and unreasonable. The Coye family through its attorney has informed them of that. And that is being challenged because there is no assessment. In fact, how can a person be assessed when they themselves don’t have access to the documents that would form the basis of the assessment. The government is holding all the cards; they are holding all their accounts, all their business records. There is nothing that the Coye family can use or have at their disposal to bring before any tribunal, to take to any entity to objectively look over to see that taxes were paid here or pay there.”

Just before the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction of money laundering Melonie’s father, Michael, passed away.
