Couple acquitted of carnal knowledge charges
A man and woman were acquitted in the Supreme Court today in connection with a report of carnal knowledge by a female minor. Immediately after a nine-member jury was empanelled to hear the case against James Saunders and Geneva Estrada, Prosecutor Kamar Henry rose before Justice Adolph Lucas this morning and offered no further evidence against the accused. As a result, Justice Lucas had no choice but to order the jury to return a not guilty verdict. Saunders was arrested after the child told authorities that he had sex with her at a Baghdad Street address. Estrada, Saunders’s girlfriend, was picked up and accused of abetting the crime. All this is alleged to have occurred more than five years ago, but the Crown’s case was weakened because the victim did not report the incident until last year. Saunders is a former bodyguard for Prime Minister Said Musa.
