One dead, one critical in San Pedro murder/suicide attempt
San Pedro police are investigating a shooting incident that has left one resident dead and another seriously injured. Authorities are still not sure how the case will be treated because just what led up to the drama is shrouded in mystery. According to reports, around midday sixty-six year old William Douglas Campbell, a U.S. citizen, shot his caretaker: thirty-nine year old Danielo Villatoro. Campbell then allegedly turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger. Villatoro, a Honduran national, received a bullet wound to the right ear and died. Campbell, who was injured in the left side of his chest, has been taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. When we contacted the K.H.M.H. this evening we were told that Campbell was in critical condition and was undergoing surgery. Police say when they arrived on the scene in the Tres Cocos area on the north side of the island they found both men lying on the ground with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Villatoro was already dead and Campbell was seriously injured. Near Campbell police found a thirty-eight revolver with two spent shells in the cylinder. Authorities say they have concluded that the same gun was used in both shootings, but are puzzled by the incident because preliminary investigations suggest that the men were friends. According to sources on the island, they rumoured to be having domestic problems with their wives, started drinking heavily and reportedly spoke about ending their lives. Police say they have also heard that theory and are investigating the incident from all angles. They are asking anyone who can assist in clearing up the mystery to call San Pedro police or Crime Stoppers at 0-800-922-TIPS.
