Broad daylight shooting on Victoria Street
The other shooting in the city today happened less than seven hours after the near-fatal attack on twenty-seven-year-old Rafael Cruz gunshots rang out near a residence on Victoria Street. Shortly after three o’clock this afternoon, a lone gunman emerged on the scene and opened fire at his quarry. Fortunately, the bullets flew wide of their intended target, a young man who was reportedly hanging out in the vicinity. While traffic along the busy thoroughfare was not entirely brought to a standstill, Scenes of Crime technicians and other officers attached to Precinct Three were busy processing the area. It is unclear what led to the brazen mid-afternoon attempt on the life of the young man as the spate of shootings across Belize City continues unchecked. In the wake of the weekend violence the police department has been executing citywide sweeps of known hotspots, including Majestic Alley on Monday afternoon, for guns and ammunition. Today, police checkpoints were established in numerous neighborhoods in attempts to bring a sense of security to citizens.
