Professor Brendan Bain granted injunction barring his dismissal from UWI

Brendan Bain

In the Jamaican Supreme Court, an order has been granted preventing the dismissal of Professor Brendan Bain as Director of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Training Network. That is, until a lawsuit against the University of the West Indies is presided over.  Professor Bain is challenging the cancellation of his contract, following his decision to provide expert testimony on homosexuality and HIV in a constitutional challenge brought by Caleb Orozco in the Supreme Court of Belize.  Orozco is seeking a repeal of Section Fifty-Three which criminalizes sex with the same gender. In Jamaica on Friday, Justice Carol Edwards granted the injunction allowing Professor Bain to keep his job in the interim.  While he is disputing the termination of his contract, Bain is also seeking damages.  His attorney, Georgia Gibson-Henlin says a date has not yet been set for the trial.  Professor Bain’s termination was to take effect as of Sunday, June fifteenth.
