Ambassador Carlos Moreno to refocus US assistance in Belize

Carlos Moreno

In recent months Belize’s military branches have benefitted from millions of dollars in equipment, infrastructure and training, courtesy of the US. Those donations are a part of a larger regional security initiative. But with a new Ambassador taking over, will the B.D.F., Coast Guard and Police continue to reap the benefits of a very beneficial partnership with the US? Today we asked Ambassador Carlos Moreno and he told us that the assistance will continue, but the focus of that assistance will likely change.

“Those types of assistance will continue but I also think there has to be kind of a refocusing of the types of assistance. Both my wife and I are very interested in education, particularly of the arts. Belize itself has a rich cultural history in art and music. In fact I was talking to the Governor-General about this. He has a very fine and deep enduring passion for music. Without disclosing the contents of that discussion, we agree that cultural assistance particularly directed towards youth…getting at the root of the problem with respect to citizen security and so forth. I think that one of my recommendations in my capacity as Ambassador here will be to channel resources in the direction of non-military assistance but to take the form of assistance in terms of educating youth in particular, steering them away from gang violence and drug use and so forth and I think the Governor-General had a fine point to make when he emphasized that the arts and music and other cultural activities were essential to the overall soul and spirit of the country. Not that I ever speak for my wife, but I know that we are one hundred percent agreed that that is also a very viable approach.”

Moreno’s appointment in Belize is for a period of three years.

Must we always be “Cap in hand” begging……..these donations and “help” come with a cost – half the world is fighting American colonialism and the filth that results (homosexual rights etc), and here we are begging this man for a dolla before this guy even unpacks his bags and feeds his cats!

No matter which side of the coin you are on, we are talking about the Belize Constitution. If the great colonial power, America, continues to buy Belize we will lose our sovereignty. Yes, they are buying us. Police trucks with American flags; Harley Davidson motorcycles from the police in California, military equipment. How much money is being funneled to the GOB to buy our politicians. A poor country is ripe for take over by colonial powers. Wake up Belize, you are being sold out by the GOB.
If weh rasss loves America so much, please move there and leave us in peace. Our country is known for it’s people and natural beauty. We are free; let’s keep it that way. We do not want Yankee masters.
