United for Kids Assists Cleyon Marage Jr. for Leukemia Treatment

Last Thursday, we showed you a ten year old student who has been diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia. But Cleyon Marage Junior cannot receive medical treatment at the local hospitals so he must travel to Merida for eighteen months of treatment. His mother, Clovis Matura, came to News Five making a public appeal for assistance in raising five thousand dollars monthly to save her son’s life. A group of Belize City residents from the organization United for Kids has decided to assist the family through fundraising events to raise the money for Cleyon’s medical treatment.

“You have a mother who needs to raise five thousand dollars Belize every month to take care of her son who is extremely sick. What touched me about this is because I am also a mother and honestly I don’t know what I would do if my little girls got sick and I was in this situation. And this poor mother and grandmother go through this not once a month, every single month and it is heartbreaking. And when you think about it, five thousand dollars is not a lot to raise and it can save this little boy’s life. So to me it is extremely, extremely important and that is why we got involved. My brother was the one who brought this to my attention. We have a group of friends called United for Kids and what we will be doing is having different events to fundraise. What’s truly touching and wonderful is that a lot of people, since we put the post on Facebook, they have reached out. We have Maggie Marroquin from Kerasi in Belmopan and she will be doing a fundraising on Saturday. United for Kids will also be doing fundraising. I think the first fundraising will be on the twenty-fifth and then it will be ongoing after that. As I said before, five thousand dollars will get him to Merida for this month; next month, he needs to do the same thing and for eighteen months, he needs to do that. So it has to be something extremely ongoing and consistent. Since yesterday, people have been sending in their donations and honestly everything helps. Yesterday at five, she had fifteen hundred dollars. People have contributed since this morning. So we are hoping that by five today, we will have at least three thousand dollars. If she has three today, she can take him to Merida tomorrow and then we will find some way of getting the extra two that we need to her in Merida.”
