Sedi Elrington Delivers Address at U.N. General Assembly

The murder of Danny Conorquie continues to be the number one topic of public importance on the airwaves five days after it occurred on the Caracol Maya site.     The PM issued a statement on Monday; he said the government believes Conorquie’s killers are Guatemalans.  But the Foreign Minister’s interviews following the murder last week, did more to stir anger than to quell public outrage. Earlier today, we listened intently to Wilfred Elrington deliver Belize’s statement to the General Assembly at the United Nations in New York, to hear if in fact there would be even a rebuke of incursions within our territory. There was none. Elrington’s statement was lukewarm and generic and focused instead on taking the Guatemalan claim to the International Court of Justice. Here is a clip on his statement:

“Highest on this list of priorities is the need to safeguard the security and territorial integrity of our country. Successive Belizean governments have invested heavily in efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the Guatemalan territorial claim over our country. Our government is unalterably wedded to the resolution of this claim peacefully by adjudication at the International Court of Justice. We have enlisted the support of all international friends and partners for that decision and the Guatemalan government is also committed through the special agreement of 2008 to the resolution of the claim by the International Court of Justice.”
