Yanie Cu Needs Your Help

Minelia Chan

Yanie Cu left a bill of eleven thousand quetzales in Guatemalan and he will need to return there for therapy and more treatment. So far, with a complete lack of official assistance, the family has relied on the largesse of the immediate community, and the constant support of caregivers and community activist Nancy Marin. It is a struggle to raise the money necessary to care for Yanie, and he will need long term care. Today, three women, who have been by his side since the accident, took the opportunity to send out a cry for help.

Minelia Chan, Aunt of Yanie Cu

“He have to go back. We are asking to Mister Segura to touch his heart and help him because he have one daughter and one son and they are going to school. You know that we have to pay at school two books, everything; but thanks god the people from Succotz and all these people that you see here are helping him. But he will go back to Guatemala; we will raise funds for him.”

“I’m asking everyone with a good heart to please help him. He is not to blame for what is happening and what has happened. So I am asking everyone to have a good heart and to help him in any way they can. He will need a lot of help. And I know that there are many good people in Belize. And I would like to thank all those who have helped so far.”

“Accidents happen and we are not pointing fingers and blaming Mister Segura for anything. If it was just an accident. But at least, he can be a man; the man that we respected and the man that we thought he was. He can come out to the family, offer his assistance, say he is sorry. He took a life and he ruined another family because this that happened doesn’t just ruin Yanie’s life. It is a family; it is children that depend on him. Thank god this is a tight-knit family that believes strongly in god as you can witness here today. But we are asking people to please come together. Yanie needs help. He has medication that he needs to get. He has a huge bill in Guatemala that he needs to still cover and I am surprised that they even let him out without finish paying his bill. And we need to cover that and he will need more treatment. And if Mister Segura won’t do it, then the people of Belize should do it.”

Today we made discreet enquiries and discovered that since Segura was in uniform and in an official vehicle when the accident occurred, any assistance in an official capacity would have to come from the Ministry of National Security. We’d suggest the family not depend on that. Special Constable Danny Conorquie was killed on September twenty-fifth, and both the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Security pledged immediate and significant assistance. So far the family has not received even a dollar.
