Mexico Offers Anti-Crime Aid
And that partnership to strengthen the trade and investments in Belize is also being backed up with assistance to fight crime and narco-trafficking, two of the biggest challenges for the city and Ambergris Caye in recent months.
Carlos Quesnel Melendez, Mexican Ambassador to Belize
“As a matter of fact, this is also one of the most important cooperation promises that we have. I had the opportunity to meet with agencies in Mexico and the training for police here in Belize to combat crime. We have some institutions in Mexico that are working closely with agencies here in Belize in areas that are very technical, like polygraph and specific areas. We would like to see more being done. I know that Belizean representatives go to Mexico to take some courses and we would like to see more Mexican trainers to come to Belize for the military forces training for police. We can offer this kind of because we have the capability and will to do it and we want to ensure that this kind of problem decrease in the next month. We have a strong cooperation in the fight against narco trafficking, as Mr Rivero mentioned in the last Bi-national meeting we have discussions on what’s the best way to fight narco trafficking, I don’t have specific information on Ambergris Caye, but what I can tell us that we have been very aggressive, both countries in order to fight this kind of crime that affects both countries. Both countries should work together and we are cooperating with each other and we hope that there are no more murders, not in Mexico or Belize.”
