K.H.M.H. Receives Donation of Incubators
The K.H.M.H. has been boosted significantly this week. Aside from a new wing for pediatric care, the Riverview Rotary Club of Edmonton Canada today donated incubators to the hospital. This donation has been made possible by Dr. Roman Bayrock and is being channeled through the Rotary Club of Belize – Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Belize. Duane Moody reports.

Earlier this week, a dedicated Pediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was officially inaugurated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. The new wing at the national referral hospital is retrofitted with twenty-three incubators quarters for doctors and nurses as well as a waiting area for families. Well today, the hospital was the recipient of five additional incubators and three radiant warmers donated by Doctor Roman Bayrock of the Riverview Rotary Club of Edmonton, Canada. Sunrise Rotary Club of Belize handed over the donation on its behalf.

“Doctor Roman Bayrock, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton which is in Canada, visited Belize last year and had some discussions with us in terms of areas in which they can collaborate and help. I think he had discussions with K.H.M.H. also and the result was what you are seeing here now which is eight incubators…sorry five incubators and three radiant warmers; all designated for the pediatric department of the K.H.M.H.”
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the hospital were Head of Pediatrics Doctor Cecilio Eck and Doctor Lisa Johnson of the K.H.M.H.

“This is a key area in services provided by the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority and we consider ourselves very blessed and very thankful for the donations that have been given to us recently and in the past and I am sure that will continue into the future.”

“I think this idea was spawned one morning when we were walking. Mister Ketz, we usually meet on the road walking in the morning. I was going through the airport and I met Miss Delfina Mitchell and she said, she could be the conduit to get some equipment and I think that was the spark. But without the Sunrise Rotary Club, without the other club and without the other club, and with the Doc from abroad having the meeting with us; I think it is a wonderful initiative when we collaborate and we get members from our own society contributing to the well-being of our children. So we appreciate the effort, we appreciate the time.”

While the process started long before the pediatric wing was established, Doctor Eck says that the equipment will also be used in other wards of the hospital.

“This is just opportunistic that at this point in time, a week before we opened our PICU/NICU that they have donated the similar equipment that we will use in there. that’s not to say that we are not grateful. This equipment will be used not only with PICU/NICU, but other areas. For example if a baby would come in the labor ward who needs it, this equipment would work there before they are transported to the PICU or to accept kids in accident and emergency when they come from outlying districts.”

Doctor Bayrock and about twenty-one other medical doctors will be in Belize this weekend to provide medical services through several community projects across the country.
