Guatemalan President Elect Embarks on Regional Tour
Jimmy Morales has embarked on a traditional tour of Central America and Mexico undertaken by incoming presidents of the region. In the case of Morales, who takes office in January fourteenth 2016, his first leg took him to Honduras to privately meet with President Juan Orlando Gutierrez. Custom issues as well as matters of security, migration and the environment were discussed. He has also made stops in El Salvador, Nicaragua and touched down in Panama today. Other visits are planned with the leaders of Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Mexico. Morales, however, will be breaking established protocol and will not be visiting Belize. His team nor has the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry explained why he won’t make the preliminary stop in Belize, which not only shares borders with Guatemala, but is also a SICA member. They won’t say officially, but the statements made by Morales in respect of Belize do not augur well for relations between the two countries. Morales has repeatedly said he will do everything he possibly can to regain Belize. It is also not known if Belize has been invited to his inauguration.
sounds like he is strengthening his international support for when he is ready to claim Belize full on!
