G.O.B. Takes Hands-Off Stance With Cubans Seeking Transit
There is no significant news on the fate of more than four thousand Cubans stuck in Costa Rica because they cannot access a transit point to the US. Late last week Prime Minister Barrow revealed that he had been contacted via phone by the Costa Rican President with a request to facilitate the transit of the Cubans to the northern border with Mexico. That request was to have been taken to Cabinet after more information was provided by official correspondence. We’re not sure that communication happened, but tonight we are sure that government has not agreed to allow the transit. Today, Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia told us that Cabinet did not have sufficient information to make a qualified decision.
Manuel Heredia, Minister of Tourism
“They brought it, but this is the last Cabinet meeting. At this point in time we do not have sufficient information as to why is it they cannot go direct from Costa Rica to Mexico or Costa Rica to the US. We have to find out more information but today it definitely didn’t go through.”
Reporter
“Do you know if government received something in writing from the Costa Rican government?”
Manuel Heredia
“Not that I know of. Not that I know.”
Reporter
“So was it set to be discussed next year?”
Manuel Heredia
“Probably. Probably. I wouldn’t be able to certify today that that will happen. But at this point definitely it didn’t go through.”
In an official release issued just before news time, G.O.B. says that while it is prepared to participate in a regional discussion on the Cubans stranded in Costa Rica, it is, “unable to make any commitments outside of a regional arrangement.”
Heredia, what is a qualified decision? Either you were born dumb or you achieve being dumb by hanging out with the Barrows and that ilk. Tell the people that you and Barrow have not been bribed sufficiently or at all to allow the transit of the Cubanos. What a shame that stinks to the high heavens.
Good call. With no assurance from the Mexican government, Belize could have been stuck with thousands of people. News stations in Miami were running the story this morning that Belize said no, but what on earth do these people expect when they are trying to enter and cross countries illegally instead of going through the proper channels? They are economic migrants hoping for jobs and government benefits, not refugees fleeing political persecution or war at home. Whichever party is in power in Belize is right to protect our sovereignty and the message will get back to Cuba pretty fast now that Belize is not the place to try to enter to go to the US illegally. Belizeans in the US do not get any of the benefits the Cubans get here. Double standard for all Caribbean people except the Cubans.
We can’t allow transit of anyone or even allow emigrants to reside in Belize. Belize does not have the finances to do background checks or even care for them in regards to food and shelter, what utter nonsense of anyone asking this of this country. Like Trump said, we can’t have you here. #####
