A New President of FIFA, A New Chapter in Football
As we told you Vicente is back following elections in which Swiss/Italian Gianni Infantino was elected President after two rounds of voting. Two hundred and nine countries are members of FIFA, and two hundred and seven participated in the selection process. Vicente told us that as a Federation they are happy for the election of new FIFA President Gianni Infantino because it signifies a new chapter in football.
Ruperto Vicente, President, Football Federation of Belize
“The new President, from the time he addressed the UNCAF nations, the Central American nations, he made it clear that the smaller countries like Belize would benefit greatly from his presidency because one of the things that he has planned is to ensure that every country has a stadium or a facility that will be able to host any tournament. So those are some of the things that we’re looking at. As well we are looking at youth development, and that is a great part of his program. As well as improving the governance of every football federation in the world. So the approval of the new statutes for FIFA also signals the change of statutes for Belize. So we are going to have to change our statutes to reflect what FIFA has in its statutes. One of the big things that FIFA is doing is separating the political aspect of football from the administrative. Again this is a signal that what had happened in Belize is one of those things that FIFA is seeking to correct.”
