PM Barrow Tells BTV Don’t Go There!

Earlier in our newscast we mentioned the BTV trip scheduled for Saturday. The government has advised that it not happen, while BTV head Wil Maheia insists that he will lead an expedition to Sarstoon Island to mark the anniversary of the 1859 Treaty. Based on what we saw first-hand on Friday as we visited the Sarstoon, it’s almost a certainty that Guatemala will, at the very least, intercept the civilian BTV. Today, the Prime Minister reiterated that he has no quarrel with the patriotism of the volunteers, but going to the Sarstoon this weekend would be misguided, not to mention dangerous.

“In the current circumstances, where we just went through an absolutely harrowing weekend…the entire country, all of us sitting at this table…where we have come through unscathed and where our diplomacy and the face to face meetings with Guatemala have produced this resolve to de-escalate tensions and to find a way routed in peace and mutual respect forward…in those circumstances for these people to maintain that they will still go to the Sarstoon on Saturday would in my view be absolutely and utterly unacceptably. We now have a forward operating base at the mouth of the river. If they go and the Guatemalans, as the Guatemalans will, seek to intercept them, our people who are there will have to react…hopefully in a way that would not cause the situation to get out of control, but that could potentially provoke just that occurrence. The Territorial Volunteers would then not just have put their own lives at risk, but the lives of the Belizean security personnel. I am saying that there is a commitment on the part of the Guatemalans bolstered by the expressions of interest, hope and optimism from the international community to work something out with that. I am appealing to the Territorial Volunteers to give peace a chance.”
So what is going to happen when Will and his Volunteers get intercepted, get into trouble…another provocation, this man just wants ratings, I bet you after this he will run for politics as the man who saved our country. Will, slow your role…you and your group need to see the consequences down the road. Your reason for going there bro…is so lame…you can do that same ceremony anywhere else in Belize…hmm…Belmopan?….Belize City?… Why Sarstoon??? In my opinion Will Maheia and his group are a big reason why we are in the mess we are in today. They have simply been provoking incidents way too many times and sadly we seem to be heading from a peaceful country to yet another country fighting with its neighbor. Add to that a crazy Guatemalan President who want to use this territorial dispute to make himself popular and boom…perfect ingredients for the situation we are in right now. I want to state that I hold Will Maheia and his Belize Territorial Volunteers responsible for the deaths of innocent Belizeans who will get caught in the cross fire. May that never happen…but Will …you and your group are part of the problem. I dare you to show me that you are part of the solution!!!
