Ministry of Health Proactive in ZIKA Public Awareness Campaign
There have been two confirmed cases of Zika in Belize so far and the Ministry of Health remains proactive in its effort to raise public awareness on the spread of the vector transmitted disease. Working closely with the Government of Belize in a technical capacity is the World Health Organization. The W.H.O. is also being aided by the Pan American Health Organization in providing professional assistance to the ministry for its awareness campaign, as well as its efforts at vector control.
Luis Roberto Escoto, Country Representative, WHO/PAHO
“We are working along with the Ministry of Health in surveillance of the cases or potential cases in the population and strengthening the surveillance of the women who are pregnant and take a lot of the action in the rural areas and the urban areas in vector control, like to clean the community, to clean the housing and public buildings and to spray to prevent the spread of Zika in the country. At this moment it’s only two cases that we have identified in the country.”
Isani Cayetano
“Is there any other form of public awareness that is taking place with regards to informing Belizeans as to what could be done with regards to vector control and, of course, spraying, as you mentioned?”
Luis Roberto Escoto
“Yes. I know there are many health workers, community health workers and the personnel from the Ministry of Health is working with the people in their community to inform and working with the people to take measures to prevent Zika.”
