Belize is Top Tourist Destination 2 Years and Counting
There is good news for the tourism industry tonight. For the second year in a row, Ambergris Caye has been named Mexico and Central America’s leading Destination at the 2016 World Travel Awards. The awards ceremony took place last Friday in Lima, Peru and once again Belize has won. Dubbed the Oscars of the tourism industry, World Travel Awards was established back in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across key sectors of the travel tourism and hospitality industry. This global recognition is the ultimate hallmark of quality and the Belize Tourism Board is excited about this win. Today, News Five spoke today with Media and Public Relations Officer, Jana Puga about what this means for Belize.
Jana Puga, Media & Public Relations Officer, B.T.B.
“This award is extremely important because the World Travel Awards is actually deemed the Oscars for travel industry. So we are very excited for this. As you said it is the second year in a row that Ambergris Caye has brought home this award and what this means is that pretty much it is going to inspire confidence in our travelers that we have right now coming to Belize and also in future tourists that are still on the fence on whether they will visit Belize. Nominations are based on the World Travel Awards Advisory Committee which consists of over two thousand media titles as well as major influencers in tourism. And from there, it is narrowed down, the list is posted and both those in the travel industry as well as consumers are able to vote.”

“What’s the next step for Belize and does it put pressure on your guys knowing that now you have to ensure that you keep up that name?”
Jana Puga
“Of course it does put pressure, but we believe we are all on the right path and I believe the award is a testament to that.”
