…And K.H.M.H. C.E.O. tries to explain rusty instruments
At the press conference the K.H.M.H. C.E.O., Francis Longsworth, went on to highlight areas in which the hospital has invested monies to improve the services. And while the doctors have provided pictures of unacceptable quality of instruments being used, Longsworth said the allegation that the instruments are rusty is not entirely true but the doctors late this evening stayed their ground.
Dr. Francis Longsworth, C.E.O., K.H.M.H.
“The instruments were discoloured and this is something that we have known is a problem with our instruments from time to time because of the types of solutions that we have been using to clean and sterilize the instruments. We have been told on more than one occasions by visiting technicians that we are using the wrong solutions and that we have been using the wrong solutions on many of our equipment and machines in the hospital. And in fact, a couple months ago we got a review by our infection control unit, in collaboration with the manager and staff from Central Sterilization Unit of the hospital to look at the solution that we’re using and to find better alternatives for the care of our instruments. That process is finished and the new solutions are now on order. So we hope that our instruments will wear a little better over time in the future. However, I have to say that where instruments in the operating theatre are concerned, the constant use of the instruments wears them out so they constantly have to be replaced and there’s—just like how you call old bank notes, you call old instruments and there’s a constant process of replacing instruments in a hospital setting. So this is not something that’s going to stop. Perhaps we need to look back to the pass and find out why we have reached this stage now, that maybe replacement was not going on at the rate that it should have been going on.”
Dr. Beatrice Thompson, Secretary, B.M.D.U.
“And if they know that the solution wears and tears the instrument, then why they didn’t change that solution long time ago? If the person at the Central Sterilizing Unit has made those recommendations long time ago, why didn’t they listen to her?”
Marion Ali
“Well, they say that it’s in the process and they’ve made an order for new solution.”
Dr. Beatrice Thompson
“I’m going to quote back to everything is a process. Everything is due process and everything is a process but the only one that can’t wait for process is the patient true? The patient can’t wait for any process. Only we, only the people in administration can wait for process. And the thing is, if they say they have instruments at Central Medical Supplies, why they don’t release it to the operating room? Why is it sitting there at Central Medical Supplies? They don’t use it over there.”
Dr. Marta Habet, Treasurer, B.M.D.U.
“The lack of supplies is getting worse and worse and worse. And the tendering process happened last year, we gave them some time to do the due process; to do the tender; do the allocation of funds and all of that and I am not aware of that. But I think the time is already due for those supplies and those medications to be in the hospitals where we need them, where the patients need them.”
