Mayor addresses support for vulnerable persons in society
The global theme for the prevention of suicide is “Connect, Communicate, Care.” Depression is a main factor in instances where people take their own lives. Mayor Darrell Bradley is advocating for support for vulnerable persons in society.
Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
“I think a lot of mental illness and suicide, a lot of the problems reflect around societal attitudes and norms and a stigma related to these issues. And in the theme that we are able to connect, so that we are able to have mechanisms that allow people an outlet; that we are able to communicate, communicate awareness and issues surrounding the causal link—depression, other mental illness—and that we are able as a society to care. We are able to show support, understanding, compassion to those who are vulnerable. I think that is very powerful and it is very important that municipal leaders and national leaders lend support to worthy initiatives like this. It is something that will require the response of members of our community, all stakeholders.”
The suicide prevention awareness flag will remain hoisted until September fourteenth.
