U.S. ‘Discusses’ Saldivar Coast Guard Situation, Assured It Will Not Happen Again
The Belmopan Bandits recently played its last game in the NEBL Finals. Players and fans of the basketball team owner by Minister of Defense John Saldivar did not show up for the away match in government transportation, namely the Boston Whalers gifted to the Coastguard by the U.S. Government. Instead, they did so privately, following a scandal in the wake of the usage of the vessels to ferry them to San Pedro. According to Adrienne Galanek, the U.S. Embassy is in discussion with G.O.B. and has received assurance that the Boston Whalers that were gifted to government will no longer be used to transport athletes for Saldivar’s private team.

“Now a couple weeks ago, the U.S. Embassy had concerns about the coastguard situation with Minister John Saldivar. I believe it was just a release or a statement via phone. Could you give us an update on that? The embassy has said that it was in an information gathering stage. Could you tell us if there is any update on that at this point?”
Adrienne Galanek, Chargé d’affaires, U.S. Embassy
“Basically we have been discussing the situation with the Government of Belize.”

“And that’s all you can say?”
Adrienne Galanek
“Right now we’re discussing it. They’re aware of our concerns and we also have assurances that the situation won’t occur again.”
