Athletes Encouraged, Vow Better Performances
For the youngsters themselves, this was no time to hang their heads. Lino, Ysaguirre and Stanley are scheduled for further competitions this year – in fact, Stanley was due to leave again for a competition in Nicaragua later on Tuesday. They told us they are not discouraged and intend to compete even harder for themselves and their country.
Gian Lino, Cyclist
“It takes a lot of training to reach those levels but we went, we did our best, and we showed those guys that we are strong as well.”
Reporter
“And this is the first time you are participating there?”
Gian Lino
“In the Bahamas, at the Commonwealths, yes.”
Reporter
“You placed eighteenth; I don’t know if you intend to return but how would you prepare that so that you can bring that up?”
Gian Lino
“Continue training harder, pick up more, learn more, find help, so that I can become as strong as those guys as well and prove that we Belizeans can do as well.”
Nashen Ysaguirre, Cyclist
“This was my first event at Commonwealth; we went to St. Lucia last year for the Caribbean Junior Championships. Later In November we should be traveling to Puerto Rico for the Caribbean Junior Championships again so you can expect a little bit more.”
Reporter
“Tell us what is it going to look like for you in terms of preparing for them?”
Nashen Ysaguirre
“I will just continue doing what I do here in Belize; I hear them talking about investing more in preparation so we can start bringing back home medals and stuff like that.”
Joshire Stanley, Track and Field
“I ran eleven-fifty-one; the competition out there was very strong.”
Reporter
“Is that your personal best or you think you could have done…”
Joshire Stanley
“I could have done much better, that is not my personal best.”
Reporter
“So what happened?”
Joshire Stanley
“I don’t know; I just ran.”
Reporter
“Was the competition too swift?”
Joshire Stanley
“It was just too strong; I just got to record it somewhere and do my best at a time, because right now I’m leaving to go to Nicaragua in two hours; I’ve just got to do my best there.”
