Taiwan Hopes for Peace between Belize and Guatemala

Foreign Minister Lee also shared his thoughts on the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute, stating only that it is Taiwan’s wish that both countries eventually arrive at a peaceful solution to the age-old issue.

“Well certainly, you know, we are also advocating peace and we hope that there will be a reconciliation between the two governments.  But I think after all, the peaceful settlement of the issue is the most important.”

“And finally, I will ask one more, the Taiwan ICDF program.  This has educated hundreds of Belizeans, however, there is some apprehension from students who are in Taiwan right now that some of the aspects, some of the features of the program, some of the features have been scaled back, for example, we have heard complaints that usually your country so generously sponsors the return trip home.  But now they are saying that that is no longer assured, for various reasons.  Will the Taiwan ICDF Scholarship Program continue as it is and as it has been with the necessary support?”

“I happen to be the chairman of ICDF; also in my delegation we also have the secretary general of ICDF with us.  I can assure you that the scholarship program will continue.  Probably we’ll even increase the numbers of the scholarship for Belizeans.  As Barbara has indicated, education is the foundation for the future of the country and I think that we have some good success stories to show to your people, to show that if you work hard, study hard and the country will get better years later.  I think the program will definitely continue and I think the investment in education is the best policy.”
