Mexico City Reels from 7.1 Earthquake
Following an eight point oh earthquake off Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico twelve days ago, a seven point one magnitude earthquake killed over a hundred people in Mexico City and surrounding states earlier this morning. The powerful earthquake toppled buildings, damaged streets and knocked out electricity for millions in Mexico. Some reports say that at least one hundred and sixteen people died mostly from Puebla, Morelos and Mexico City. Twenty-seven buildings collapsed in the capital. Videos online show rescue workers in hard hats and civilians in a Mexico City neighborhood combing through two-storey high piles of rubble in search of survivors. Some carried away buckets full of debris. All public and private schools in Mexico City are cancelled until further notice from the Ministry of Education. The airport in the capital city is also closed pending the assessment of infrastructure. The deadly earthquake hit just a few hours after many people took part in drills and commemorative events on the anniversary of a devastating earthquake that killed thousands in Mexico City, more than three decades ago.
