“Spice Boyz” Look for Upset; Team Belize Says No Way

Shalrie Joseph

The Belize National Team has been actively preparing for the past four weeks in anticipation of the international friendly match on Thursday at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, in Belmopan. That match begins at eight p.m. But even before the teams take to the field, News Five found out how prepared both teams are. We spoke with Star goalkeeper Woodrow West of Team Belize Jaguars and Coach Shalrie Joseph of Spice Boyz out of Grenada.

Shalrie Joseph, Coach, Team Grenada

“I just want to thank the federation of Belize and the people of Belize for accepting our invitation. We look forward for the game tomorrow night. We’ve been preparing for a couple of weeks now, getting the boys together and I think this game will be something for test to see where we are as a country. We look forward to the game tomorrow night; everyone’s preparing well. And like I said, it is something that we’ve been dying to do for a while now. This is my first couple of weeks in charge so I’m just excited for the opportunity to get to develop and to get to watch talent tomorrow. And we look forward to an exciting exhibition tomorrow night.”

“My preparation is on a daily basis. I train every day, but I have like two days now with the team and I’ve been training and trying to get the chemistry and the tactic work with the coach. This evening we are going to do the last training and see how we pair off tomorrow. The coach just spoke from the Grenada team says that they have a young squad too and they are just building same as us—I think we are even in that aspect. But we personally and Salazar that comes from international games and stuff, we trying to see how we can get the team and we are playing home so I believe that we should win no matter what—even if it is a friendly or not.”

“With this preparation game, we are hoping that in the end that our team plays at their best and later on we can prepare for other friendly matches.”

“I expect a good game. Obviously I’ve done my research on the previous games they’ve played, but like he said, it is a totally different team from watching the face now and I like where in terms of where Belize is heading with the federation. They are infusing their team with youth and that’s the same thing I have done with my team. We have called some overseas players and added some young talent to what I think is a core group that has been together for a while. But I think both of us right now in terms of federation and in terms of country, we are looking ahead for what’s in September and this is a great preparation game to see where we are as a team.”
