Visiting medics treat minor ailments

Story Picture
This morning, Belize City residents received free basic medical care thanks a group of visiting medics from the United States. The team of doctors and medical students are here thanks to the efforts of Unity Outreach Ministries in Belize, and according to team leader John Eckhardt, the service might seem minimal but it does make a difference.

John Eckhardt, Friends of the Fatherless Ministry

“We work in different nations of the world bringing medical relief, clothing, and vitamin help for orphans and fatherless kids.”

“We put together a team, primarily of young people with some adult supervision who have a heart to serve people and care for other people who are less unfortunate than we are. We have a lot of resources in the states and so we figure we can bring some of those resources to people who don’t have as many as we do.”

“We’re providing care for skin wounds, infections, things that require antibiotics and ointments. We’re testing for blood pressure, pulse rate, general testing before we prescribe anything, even if we were to prescribe aspirin or Tylenol.”

Erna Jones, Unity Outreach Ministries

“Outreach will continue this by helping people as they can visit us at our offices at the Commercial Centre or touch base with Sister Jones or somebody in the group, and then you know, we will try to continue this. We have already been doing it helping people going to the doctors and when they have need, we do feeding programs and things like that. But we don’t make a lot of noise because the Bible says that when you do it to the poor and the needy, you don’t have to tell everybody.”

The group will be conducting a similar clinic at Constitution Park tomorrow and in the Cayo District later in the week. The team leaves Belize next Saturday.
